Recreation & Culture Services
The Recreation & Culture Services Branch is responsible for the provision of recreation, leisure and cultural opportunities that contribute to healthy communities and engaged citizens. This includes planning and delivery of recreation and culture programs, community events, the promotion and operation of recreation facilities and community centres and delivering leisure services and programs.
Programs and Facilities
The Programs and Facilities Division is responsible for:
The management of fitness and leisure programs (arts, drama, dance and music) at the Civic Recreation Complex, South Oshawa Community Centre, Arts Resource Centre, Northview Community Centre, Harman Park Arena, Children's Arena and the Memorial Park Band Shell.
The management of general interest, sports and aquatics programs at the Legends Centre, Donevan Recreation Complex and Columbus Community Centre.
The Facility Operations Division is responsible for maintaining the physical operation of all City recreation facilities, arenas, outdoor pools, Columbus Community Centre and Memorial Park Band Shell.
Centralized Recreation Services
This Division is responsible for promotion and co-ordination of special events such as the Peony Festival, Canada Day, Christmas Tree Lighting and Oshawa Celebrates.
This Division is responsible for research and trends analysis for recreation programs, community outreach and engagement activities, volunteer management, facility booking, program registration and memberships.
In February 2014, City Council approved Culture Counts: Oshawa's Arts, Culture and Heritage Plan. The plan contains strategies and actions which will guide the City's cultural development over the next 15 years.
This Division of the Recreation & Culture Services Branch is responsible for leading the implementation of the plan, along with an interdepartmental cultural staff team.
