Animal Services
Humane Society of Durham Region
An affiliate of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Ontario SPCA), the Humane Society of Durham Region is dedicated to providing concern and caring treatment of animals in distress.
The Humane Society of Durham Region employs a Cruelty Investigator and also has volunteer agents who answer, investigate and address complaints of cruelty and neglect toward area animals. The Society operates a shelter for those animals abandoned in distress (with no access to food, water or shelter) or who have been abused. In addition, when space permits, Oshawa and area residents who experience lifestyle, health or relocation changes may bring in pets that can no longer be cared for and the Society will attempt to find adoptive families for them. Please call the shelter first to ensure that they are able to take in a pet in these circumstances.
The Humane Society of Durham Region does not take strays: these go to the City of Oshawa's Animal Services Centre. A few of these animals are redirected to the Society after the maximum term at the Oshawa Animal Services, if they are judged to be particularly friendly pets.
If you are interested in adopting a cat, dog, bird, or small animal such as a hamster or gerbil, contact the Humane Society of Durham Region.
