Regional Municipality of Durham

The government of the Province of Ontario, by virtue of the Regional Municipality of Durham Act of January 1, 1974, created the Regional Municipality of Durham. Located immediately to the East of Metropolitan Toronto, the Region of Durham is comprised of eight area municipalities including the City of Oshawa.

The Region takes in a total area of about 1,000 rural and urban square miles and has a population of over 470,000. The southern portion of the Region has several major industries and two nuclear power generating stations. Farming is the predominate occupation in the northern portion of the Region.

The main Regional responsibilities include:

• Strategic land use planning;
• Subdivision and condominium approval;
• Delegated authority for Area Municipal Official Plans and Amendments;
• Water supply and distribution;
• Water billing;
• Sewage collection and treatment;
• Police services;
• Main roads, traffic lights and controls;
• Refuse disposal;
• Health and social services;
• Emergency measures;
• All borrowing of money for capital expenditures;
• Economic development and tourism.
