Oshawa is the commercial and cultural centre of the Region of Durham, one of Canada's fastest growing urban areas. The Durham Region Official Plan, which reasserts Oshawa's dominant role in the Region, shows that the City has room to grow. The Plan provides for anticipated population growth in Oshawa of up to 340,000, with related workforce growth of 78,000 industrial, 28,000 major-office and 55,000 service-sector jobs. The City will have no problem servicing this expansion. With the upgrading of the Regional water treatment facility, water and waste treatment capacity will be virtually unlimited and among the most modern in Canada.
