Grass Fire a Summer Hazard

Oshawa Fire Services would like to remind residents of the danger grass fires can cause. The warm weather increases the potential for grass fires to occur in open fields, wooded areas and pathways covered with dead and dry vegetation.

Fighting grass fires is challenging because there is difficulty getting water to the area, which hinders extinguishing efforts. Wind can also play a large factor in the spread of a grass fire and could end up endangering neighbouring structures.

Residents are asked to pay attention to their surroundings and be cautious when discarding cigarette butts and matches outside.

Parents should also ensure matches and lighters are kept in areas not accessible to children.

Lighting a grass fire intentionally could result in a charge of arson.
