Large Item Collections
Residents living in single family dwellings, semi-detached, duplexes, townhouses and apartments with 3 units or less may receive collection of large household items and appliances on a call in basis.
Residents living in apartments or condominium complexes with more than 3 units must arrange for the collection through their property manager or landlord.
Before scheduling your collection PLEASE consider donating and diverting your unwantables instead:
- Check out the various diversion programs available
- Take advantage of programs available at the Durham Region Waste Management Facility

- Donate materials in good condition to a local charity like the Salvation Army or Habitat for Humanity Durham's ReStore

About the program:
- 12 item limit applies to ALL large item collections
- First large item collection in a calendar year is free
- Fee for subsequent large item collections scheduled within the calendar year are $25 per pick-up (unlimited number of pick-ups per year)
- There is no charge for seniors and residents with disabilities (must reside at the address)
- Resident must be 65 years of age (or older) or have a disability. Proof of senior status or proof of disability must be provided prior to booking the large item collection. Proof of disability may be:
- ODSP Receipt
- CNIB Client Card
- Access 2 Entertainment
- Disability Travel Card
- Doctor's Note
- All large item collections are scheduled on date of your normal residual waste collection
- Large item collections must be scheduled at least 2 business days in advance of normal residual waste collection day
Collection Requirements:
- Items must not exceed 3 metres (10 ft) in length or weigh more than 70 kg (154 lbs)
- Bundled items must not exceed 76 cm in length and 36 cm in width and height (30" x 14" x 14") and be less than 20 kg (44 lbs)
- For safety, please remove all doors from appliances prior to collection
- Set out items no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before scheduled collection and no later than 7 a.m. on the day of the collection. Any items not collected must be removed from the curb by 8 p.m.
- DO NOT place items at the curb days in advance: this will encourage illegal dumping, which you will be responsible for if items exceed the 12 item limit
- Requests for cancellation must be received at least 2 business days in advance of collection
What can be picked up:
- Household appliances
- Furniture
- Bed frames
- Mattresses & box springs
- Sinks & toilets
- Carpet & underlay
What can not be picked up:
- Tires or vehicle parts
- Hazardous waste
- Demolition/renovation material
