Fourth Annual Ontario Town and Gown Symposium, May 14-16, 2008

The City of Oshawa will be hosting the Fourth Annual Ontario Town and Gown Symposium at the Durham College and University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) campus, 2000 Simcoe Street North, Oshawa from May 14 to 16, 2008. This year’s conference theme is “Bringing Communities Together”.

“As Oshawa evolves into an epicenter of high learning, our place among Ontario’s postsecondary communities has become more apparent,” stated Mayor John Gray. “Due to the successful efforts to bridge differences with dialogue and cooperation within our City’s Town and Gown neighborhoods, it is fitting that this year’s symposium is being held in Oshawa.” Town and Gown Committees exist in University/College based communities. Their focus is to bring people and groups together to address Town & Gown issues, build bridges between all stakeholders, and to make the post secondary school experience a memorable and positive time for our students and the community.

Attending the symposium will be municipal, college/university, neighbourhood and student representatives, as well as police, members of City Council from various municipalities, developers, builders and landlords from across Ontario.

“The theme of the 2008 Symposium is Bringing Communities Together,” said Jerry Conlin, Director of Municipal Law Enforcement and Licensing Services. “These three words alone really capture the role of Town and Gown Committees in bringing all stakeholder groups together to find common ground and to build bridges to improve relations between the town (being the community) and the gown (being the university and the student population)”.

“The 2008 Symposium will provide opportunities to learn, share ideas and best practices, and to create opportunities for positive change,” Conlin added. Symposium topics will include:

  • Licensing rental residential housing
  • Community partnerships
  • Student purpose housing
  • Safe communities
  • Best practices
  • Neighbourhood Relations
  • Stakeholder input to Town and Gown relations

Registration forms must be received by May 7, 2008.
