Downtown Murals

In the fall of 1993, City Council appointed the Downtown Action Committee (DAC), a group of 21 volunteers who represent major stakeholders in downtown Oshawa, with the mandate to co-ordinate improvements in the downtown area.

DAC decided that wall murals would be among its first endeavors, as it was felt that murals would beautify the downtown, add interest and instill civic pride. DAC achieved its initial goal by having the first five murals painted in the summer of 1995. Many murals have appeared since then.

The Mural Subcommittee, which plans and co-ordinates the program, is made up of a variety of community volunteers. A jury selection process is undertaken to choose the artists.

DAC feels that the best mural artists in the country have been assembled to work their magic in downtown Oshawa. Walking and step-on tours of the murals are available during the summer months of June, July and August. To arrange a tour, please contact Councillor Louise Parkes at 905-404-8007, extension 202. To plan your own tour or see pictures of some of the murals, check out the map of mural locations.

Take a step back into our rich historical past and enjoy the murals...they are there for your pleasure.
