| Oshawa Fire Services launches Alarmed for Life program | |
| Description: | Oshawa Fire Services may visit your neighbourhood as part of the annual Alarmed for Life program that runs from April through October. Fire suppression crews will visit in the early evening hours to help ensure that neighbourhood homes have working smoke alarms, and to answer fire safety questions. As part of this service, homeowners will have the opportunity to purchase smoke alarms at a cost of $10 each which will be added to the property owners’ municipal tax bill. "Participation by homeowners and tenants is essential for the success of the program," says Oshawa Fire Chief Steve Meringer. Homeowners are reminded that smoke alarms are required on every storey of their home, including the basement, as well as outside all sleeping areas. Not having working smoke alarms, intentionally disabling smoke alarms, or failure to maintain working smoke alarms could result in fines from $235 to $50,000 for an individual. "The primary focus of the program is to educate homeowners and assist in ensuring their families are protected, rather than handing out fines," added Fire Chief Meringer. "Working smoke alarms along with a home escape plan are your best line of defense, in the event you experience a fire in your home." The Alarmed for Life program assists in increasing the level of safety for Oshawa residents and supports Oshawa Fire Services’ efforts to ensure that every home in Oshawa has working smoke alarms. For more information, contact Oshawa Fire Services - Fire Prevention Division at 905-433-1236 or visit www.oshawa.ca/fire. |
