In June 2016, the Province announced the extension of GO Rail service along the Lakeshore East corridor using the Canadian pacific (C.P.) rail line running north of highway 401 through central Oshawa to Courtice and Bowmanville. The extension would connect east Durham by rail to Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Scarborough, downtown Toronto, and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area.
Areas to the east including Port Hope, Cobourg and Northumberland County, and Peterborough City and County would also benefit from easier access to a regional transit system.
On May 2, 2019, Metrolinx announced that the cost of the GO Lakeshore East Extension project had escalated since the project was given the go-ahead in June 2016. Metrolinx is now considering four options for the extension of GO rail service on the Lakeshore East Corridor.
The route north of the highway 401 as originally approved in 2011, now called Option 1 by Metrolinx, is the route preferred by Durham and the local area municipalities, under option one. Four new GO Stations are proposed.
As part of this extension, a GO Station is proposed on lands north of Champlain Avenue on the west side of Thornton Road South, between Burns Street East and Hwy 401, south of the Canadian Pacific rail corridor.
This GO Station will integrate bus, rail and vehicle travel, and spur the development of adjacent employment areas in Oshawa and Whitby, as well as facilitate transit access to the Trent University Durham GTA campus in Oshawa and the Whitby campus of Durham College.

As part of the Lakeshore East GO Train Extension under option one, a GO Station and multi-modal transportation hub is proposed midway between Simcoe Street South and Ritson Road South, and between Olive Avenue East and First Avenue. This development will integrate bus, rail and vehicle travel, and spur revitalization of the surrounding active transportation (walking and cycling) neighbourhood.

The Courtice station site is proposed for west of Courtice Road, just north of Baseline Road West and Hwy 401.
The Bowmanville station site would be located southwest of the intersection of Regional Road 57 and King Street/Hwy 2 West.
The following scrolling photo carousel (place curser on photo to reveal an advance arrow and hold button) shows the locations of the proposed GO station sites and potential land for development/redevelopment. For further explanation of the aerial photos, go to the Economic Impact Analysis.
