Metrolinx is working with Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) to advance infrastructure and service planning that will bring new GO rail service to a 20km extension of the Lakeshore East GO line by 2024.
The plan is to have four GO trains each morning and four each afternoon in and out of Bowmanville when the service starts.
Four new stations are being built to support the service: Thornton Road in Oshawa, Ritson Road in Oshawa, Courtice Road in Courtice, and Martin Road in Bowmanville.

At the Metrolinx Board meeting, the Preliminary Design Business Case confirms the feasibility of the alignment identified in the Initial Business Case, while examining 2 different weekend service options. The alignment proposes one new track plus sidings and passing tracks where necessary through Oshawa GO station connecting to CP’s GM spur line to cross Highway 401, making an eventual connection through CP’s Belleville Subdivision to Bowmanville. |

March 2021 | The Initial Business Case (IBC) for the Bowmanville Rail Service Expansion has been finalized. The IBC examined various options and allowed Metrolinx to select one single option for further development through preliminary design and to be evaluation through a Preliminary Design Business Case (PDBC). The PDBC is the next step in Metrolinx’s business case lifecycle. | |
Expected operational by 2024 | Bowmanville Rail Expansion service |
Expanded rail service will provide Durham Region with more direct connections to the larger GO Transit network, helping to reduce congestion in the GTHA while connecting people to education and job opportunities.
Expanding GO Train service in Durham Region builds upon planning work and service and infrastructure improvements that are already underway through our Regional Transportation Plan.
More GO service to Bowmanville is part of the Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
For additional project updates visit the Metrolinx Bowmanville expansion webpage.
The expected completion is 2024.
