Construction Inspector |
Support the Construction Inspector on construction projects related to Capital Work and Subdivision Development work. In this position you will have the opportunity to review contract documents in the form of drawings and specifications to gain an understanding of the construction process from execution to completion.
Responsibilities
Assist in the inspection of construction execution to ensure work is happening in accordance with the contract documents by taking photographs of the work, learning how to measure quantities of work with tools such as a tape measure, measuring wheel or calculating quantities from construction drawings; assisting the construction inspector in documenting activities including preparing final measurement documentation, preparing and distributing meeting minutes and various other construction forms for review and approval; assist in compiling measured quantities from daily site inspection logs for the purpose of preparing payment certificates; making tender documents available in an accessible format, maintaining a database of all unit pricing received for all construction contracts by implementing a spreadsheet and entering the necessary unit rates as each tender closes; maintaining a database of capital contracts in the maintenance period and advise staff when required inspections are to take place.

Municipal Law Enforcement Officer |
Student enforcement staff are an important component of the Municipal Law Enforcement workforce and are key to the successful delivery of our services. Investigation and enforcement of applicable by-laws with respect to long grass, weeds and debris and assisting other staff in all by-law related matters.
Responsibilities
Investigate and assess validity of by-law complaints and initiate enforcement when necessary. Conduct research, carry out field/site inspections, making field notes and communicating by-law provisions.
Assist in the performance of all office functions as assigned, including answering the telephone, data entry, word processing and search of records, handling complaints, enquiries, and requests for assistance. Filing, maintaining daily logs, and performing other general clerical duties.
Provide good, efficient customer service in all aspects of operations. Participate in public education activities. Maintain good public relations in discussing and resolving issues related to the department.
Provide advice and assistance to both internal and external personnel, agencies and the public in the enforcement of a variety of municipal by-laws.

Parks |
Student labourers are an important component of the Road Operations workforce and are key to the successful delivery of programs and services. Perform various general labouring duties.
- Perform manual cutting and trimming of grass.
- Operation and maintenance of grass cutting tractor/mowers; small power tools or equipment such as rototillers, generators, or leaf blowers.
- General park clean-up, including litter pick-up and removal, raking, loading and removal of leaves.
- Lining ball diamonds, soccer pitches, football fields and installing bases and home plates.
- Assigned duties related to cemetery operations.
- Flower and shrub bed maintenance; assisting in landscape projects; forestry duties such as pruning, planting and removal of trees and other plant material.

Traffic |
Student Traffic labourers are an important component of the Road Operations workforce and are key to the successful delivery of programs and services. Perform various general labouring duties.
Responsibilities

Shovelling and digging holes for traffic posts and carrying and placing signs and posts.

Setting up and maintaining traffic counter equipment.

Assisting and participating in the setup of Traffic Protection Control for work crews and special community events and providing Traffic Protection as a Traffic control person.

Operating and maintaining traffic line grinders and traffic paint machines.

Operating and maintaining small power tools or equipment such as hammer drills, cordless drills, saws, ramset fastener guns and power brooms.

Repair and maintenance of various traffic structures such as posts, parking curbs and signage.

Performing duties such as grass trimming, tree brushing and pruning in the maintenance of sight obstructions and other traffic related signage.

Performing building maintenance functions including sweeping, polishing, washing and general repairs such as painting and carpentry, which may require working from ladders.

Completing appropriate work records and related paper work such as sign inspection sheets, time sheets and event/activity schedules and notify traffic Supervisors of maintenance requirements and feedback on assignments.

Take sign reflectivity readings using and accurately recording values in a computer.

Assisting in the setup of Traffic Protection Control and providing Traffic Protection as a Traffic Control Person.

Operation and maintenance of small power tools or equipment such as hammer drills,
cordless drills, saws and cord trimmers.

Performing duties such as grass trimming, tree brushing and pruning.

Performing general cleaning, litter and garbage removal.

Assist crew members with removing blockages from creeks.

Performing building maintenance functions including sweeping, polishing, washing and general repairs such as painting and carpentry, which may require working from ladders.

Engineering Services |

Recreation and Culture Events Assistant |
Perform various duties in the Recreation and Culture Services Branch within the Department of Community Services. This position will assist with the implementation of City of Oshawa events, city supported events and community engagement programs.
Responsibilities
- Conducting research and analysis and assisting in the development and implementation of the following project areas: facility rentals, recreation programs and services, event planning packages and resources, procedures, and user and participant surveys.
- Providing administrative and logistics assistance for recreation and culture meetings.
- Assisting with related marketing and communication activities.
- Providing support for event staff as necessary.
- Providing event and program information via phone/email.
- Receiving applications, submissions, emails for events and community engagement initiatives.
- Inputting data into Microsoft office and other database software.

Paralegal |
Supporting Lawyers, the Municipal Prosecutor/ Screening Officer and assisting other staff in all legal support matters.
Responsibilities
- Providing support in the assembly, preparation and filing of materials in court and/or tribunal.
- Providing support in the preparation of disclosure, which includes preparing packages and redactions where appropriate.
- Providing support in organizing briefs and corresponding dockets in advance of court and/or tribunal appearances.
- Checking initial and completed dockets to ensure correctness and that all information is available for the court and/or tribunal.
- Assisting with the obtaining of additional evidence from Durham Regional Police or City by-law enforcement officers.
- Providing quality customer service in responding to telephone, e-mail, mail and walk-in inquiries, and responding to or redirecting the inquirer, and notifying witnesses of the status of charges under the Provincial Offences Act (“POA”).
- Assisting with maintaining an efficient, specific filing information retrieval system, updates databases, and provides reports as required.
- Providing administrative support, including but not limited to, opening and distributing mail; keying reports, memos, and letters; proofreading and editing; photocopying and collating; conducting research; maintaining calendars; processing forms; ordering office supplies etc.
- Performing routine tasks on various legal files at the direction of the Municipal Prosecutor/ Screening Officer, Lawyers and/or Clerks, when required.
- Assisting with the conducting of legal research on a wide range of matters (including but not limited to legislation, regulations, municipal by-laws, policies and programs, litigation, Freedom of Information requests).

Pool Attendant |
assist in maintaining pool water/filtration and building mechanical systems, monitor/maintain outdoor splash pads and perform general custodial duties and program requirements as assigned, in the operation and maintenance of assigned facility.
Responsibilities
- Monitor pool water conditions, filtration systems and building mechanical systems
- Pool/splash pad maintenance such as vacuuming and backwashing the pool, washing the deck, monitoring, maintain and recording the condition of pool equipment and water chemistry.
- Maintain washrooms, change/dressing rooms and associated area in a sanitary condition.
- Perform general caretaking duties in the overall facility such as cleaning floors, wet mopping, operating power cleaning equipment, etc.
- Perform building maintenance functions including sweeping, polishing, washing and general repairs such as painting, carpentry, plumbing etc.
- Take initiative to correct maintenance or risk management concerns and/or notify supervisor and other staff where appropriate.
- Work in accordance with the City of Oshawa’s Safe Work Standards and the Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act.
- Maintain appropriate work records.
- Ensure that facility users act in an orderly fashion, reporting problems to the supervisor; respond to routine inquiries related to the use of the facility.
- Maintain good public relations with customers, user groups and colleagues.
- Drive to off-site locations to pick up supplies, electrical and/or mechanical parts on routine as well as emergency basis.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Information Technology, Client Support |
Provide entry level technical support assistance to City Staff and deployment assistance to Support Analysts.
Responsibilities
- Answer City IT Helpdesk phone calls, enter details of issue, triage and assign as per IT call entry process.
- Provide technical assistance for basic issues where possible
- Assist with review and update of existing Helpdesk calls
- Transport and/or deploy IT assets at direction of ITS staff
- Deploy software as directed.
