Standards for the placement of election signs on public and private property are established in the City of Oshawa's Election Sign By-law 42-2014, the Region of Durham's Temporary Sign By-law 52-2020 and the Province's Corridor Signing Policy.

The City has prepared a summary of election sign standards for reference purposes.

Where do the Standards Apply?

  • City of Oshawa Election Sign By-law 42-2014: City of Oshawa and Region of Durham roads and boulevards, property owned by the City of Oshawa, and private property within the City of Oshawa
  • Province of Ontario Corridor Signing Policy: 400 m of any limit of a provincial highway

What are the Standards?

The following is for reference purposes only; please refer to the applicable by-law for a comprehensive account of relevant standards.

When can election signs be erected and when must they be removed?

Municipal Election

Signs can be placed starting on Monday, September 12, 2022 for the 2022 Municipal & School Board Elections. Signs must be removed by Monday, October 31, 2022.

Provincial or Federal Elections

Signs can be placed starting the day on which the writ of the election is issued. Signs must be removed seven days following the last polling day.

Where can election signs be placed?

Signs must be placed according the following roadway setback regulations:

  • 1 m from curb
  • 2 m from road, if there is no curb

What are the maximum sizes for election signs?

Public Property

Signs must abide by the following roadway regulations:

  • No more than 0.6 m above the curb or shoulder (top of sign, including structure)
  • No more than 1.2 m in width

How can I pick up election signs that were collected by the City?

2022 Municipal Election: election signs collected by the City of Oshawa must be retrieved on or before October 31, 2022. Retrieval of signs must be arranged with Service Oshawa in cooperation with Municipal Law Enforcement and Licensing Services.  For more information, contact Service Oshawa.

2022 Provincial Election: election signs collected by the City of Oshawa must be retrieved on or before June 9, 2022. Retrieval of signs must be arranged with Service Oshawa in cooperation with Municipal Law Enforcement and Licensing Services.  For more information, contact Service Oshawa.
