Mayor Carter thrilled with investment, third shift at Oshawa Assembly Plant
On behalf of the City of Oshawa, Mayor Carter enthusiastically welcomed the announcement that GM Canada will add light-duty pickup production and a third shift at the Oshawa Assembly Plant, creating more than 2,600 new jobs since operations resumed at the plant.
With the third shift of production, the Oshawa Assembly Plant will become the only GM plant producing both heavy-duty and light-duty pickups. The investment further solidifies Oshawa as a key player in the new transformed automotive industry while keeping thousands of quality jobs and manufacturing operations in Oshawa.
GM Canada also announced it will start production at Canada’s first full-scale electric-vehicle manufacturing plant in Ingersoll. The announcement was made with the federal and Ontario governments at the recently opened Canadian Technical Centre’s McLaughlin Advanced Technology Track in Oshawa. GM Canada’s historic $2 billion investment to transform the two manufacturing facilities is supported by the federal government and Ontario’s provincial government each investing up to $259 million to support the transformation of the manufacturing facilities.
In November 2021, the Oshawa Assembly Plant reopened, producing the Chevrolet Silverado pickup. This marked an up to $1.3 billion investment by GM Canada to retool and reopen the plant to produce which created up to 1,800 jobs. Additionally, GM Canada has recently invested $170 million to develop the 55-acre McLaughlin Advanced Technology Track autonomous vehicle test track and in a new stamping manufacturing facility.
