Message from His Worship Mayor Dan Carter to Business Community Stakeholders, June 2022
June is Convocation Month in the City of Oshawa, with thousands of new graduates joined by their family members and friends celebrating in our community from June 2 to 17.
During this exciting time of year, the City is sharing in the celebrations with graduates from Durham College, Ontario Tech University and Trent University Durham GTA. As we welcome the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022, and honour their many academic achievements, residents and visitors will notice unique additions in Oshawa’s downtown to help celebrate this momentous occasion, including:
- Selfie stations
- Window signage & stickers
- Convocation ambassadors to assist with wayfinding and contributing to the celebratory experience
Higher education continues to play a significant role within the Oshawa community; most notably with TeachingCity Oshawa. Launched in June 2017, TeachingCity brings together the City of Oshawa and its education and research partners – Durham College, Ontario Tech University, Trent University Durham GTA, and the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Applied Science & Engineering. The partners address urban issues through innovation, collaboration, applied research and shared experiential learning opportunities with the aim of positioning Oshawa as a local, national and global community of urban research and learning.
To support local businesses during this period, we’re encouraging convocation visitors to explore our community and discover the many great venues that contribute to the student and family experience in Oshawa. Whether visitors to our community are looking for the perfect food spot or some great entertainment, we are encouraging them to visit our Oshawa Spring Guide as an introduction and starting point.
Talent is one of the greatest assets that the City of Oshawa has to offer. This month, we celebrate Oshawa’s post-secondary graduates and the strength of our partners in developing the next generation of leaders and problem solvers. With three leading post-secondary institutions, the energy brought to the great City of Oshawa at this time of year is exciting and offers us the opportunity to reflect on the talents of our new graduates who will make their mark across the world.
Should your business be interested in post-secondary collaborations of any kind, whether that is a co-op opportunity, internship or research, we encourage you to reach out to with us by contacting the Economic Development team at [email protected] or 905-436-5617 or reaching me at 905-436-3311 or [email protected]. We want to hear from you, understand how we can support your recovery and how our strong post-secondary partnerships may be able to play a role.
Yours truly,
Dan Carter
Mayor
