The City of Oshawa officially welcomed summer on June 25 with the highly anticipated opening of Lakeview Park’s completely redesigned playground and splash pad. Designed with many unique elements, the larger play areas offer a wide variety of activities and challenges for children of all ages and all abilities.
The Lakeview Park Playground and Splash Pad Redevelopment was designed with holistic, inclusive play features for all abilities, and includes three separate areas of play for children of all ages.
The junior play area is fully accessible, including rubber surfacing, wheelchair ramp access to the play structure, and two inclusive accessible belt-in swings, which provides head and back support; and a me-you swing, which promotes inclusion and play alongside peers. Preschoolers can spend their energy exploring the variety of ramps, sheltered areas, and quiet play activities on the fully rubberized play surface.
The senior play area includes the first Giant XL play structure in Ontario. Standing at almost nine metres tall, the action-packed, multi-level structure tower offers speedy slides and climbing opportunities. The challenges heighten on the double zip line, the CocoWave pendulum swing and by climbing the Spacenet. The senior play area incorporates accessible play features, including a transfer station for the tower, ground level and elevated activities, and an inclusive nest swing, which provides a swinging play experience in a social setting. It allows for a parent, sibling, or friend, to join on the swing, or for an individual to lie down.
In addition, there is increased seating areas adjacent to both the junior and senior play areas, providing shade and views to both areas. Adjacent to the playground is Oshawa’s largest all new splash pad, featuring 280 square metres of cooling fun with a multitude of spray features including top sprays, ground sprays, fountain sprays, as well as a water dump bucket.
