Charge into fire safety during Fire Prevention Week
Oshawa Fire Services is reminding families of the importance of charging devices safely, recycling lithium-ion batteries properly and choosing products wisely. This year’s Fire Prevention Week runs from October 5th to 11th, and the theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
This year’s campaign educates everyone about using lithium - ion batteries safely. This campaign stresses the importance of buying, charging, and recycling batteries responsibly.
Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device, unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
Recycle batteries responsibly. Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins, as they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit recycleyourbatteries.ca to find a recycling spot near you.
In support of Fire Prevention Week, Oshawa Fire Services will be out in the community sharing important fire safety information at various locations throughout the week.
Learn about the importance of safe charging, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, home escape planning, and other essential fire safety practices through live demonstrations, interactive displays, and fire truck tours.
