40km/h Area Speed Limit Program

Speed signage

The City of Oshawa has lowered speed limits within residential neighbourhoods to improve road safety.

As part of the 40 km/h area speed limit program approved by City Council, speed limits that are usually a maximum of 50 km/h will now be reduced to 40 km/h across entire neighbourhoods.

New "40 km/h Area" signs will be placed at neighbourhood entrances and exits to show where the speed limits apply.

How will this affect my neighbourhood?

Staff are working on the 40 km/h area speed limit program and aim to complete all residential neighbourhoods by the end of 2027. The 40 km/h areas are being installed based on priority where vulnerable road users are more common (such as school and park areas).

Future residential neighbourhoods will also be included in the 40 km/h area speed limit program.

A list of installed 40 km/h areas are located in Traffic By-law Schedule 26 ‘Maximum Rate of Speed Area.
