Charge into fire safety: Fire Prevention Week
Oshawa Fire Services is reminding families of the importance of charging lithium-ion battery devices safely and properly. This year’s Fire Prevention Week runs from October 4 to 10, and the theme is “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower.”
This year’s campaign focuses on everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer.
Cheap charger? Don’t chance it. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ULC, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.
Charge devices safely.
- Always use the cords that came with the product to charge and follow the instructions from the manufacturer.
- Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved
- Charge your device on a hard surface.
- Don’t overcharge your device, unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged.
- Charge e-bikes, scooters and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging.
Recycle batteries responsibly. Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins, as they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. Visit recycleyourbatteries.ca to find a recycling spot near you.
