Supporting safe and vibrant communities
The City of Oshawa has Council-approved property maintenance and yard care by-laws that help keep neighbourhoods safe, clean, and attractive. These by-laws establish clear standards for property upkeep and outline the responsibilities of property owners.
Property owners are required to maintain their properties and adjoining boulevards in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Common property maintenance requirements include:
- Trimming hedges and tree branches so they do not obstruct sidewalks or create hazards for pedestrians and vehicles
- Maintaining shrubs, bushes, and other vegetation at a reasonable height to preserve visibility and enhance neighbourhood appearance
- Cutting grass and removing weeds on a regular basis
- Removing garbage, waste, and other debris
- Eliminating standing water that may create health, safety, or environmental concerns
- Properly maintaining natural features and landscaped areas to help preserve the character and appearance of the community.
These by-laws reflect the City's commitment to maintaining safe, healthy, and livable communities. By applying consistent property maintenance standards, the City can address community concerns while supporting residents in caring for their property responsibly.
Residents are encouraged to review the applicable by-law requirements and take the necessary steps to ensure their properties remain in compliance.
Community members are asked to report any property related concerns to Service Oshawa at service.oshawa.ca, service@oshawa.ca or 905-436-3311.
