Open Air Burning

The City of Oshawa's Open air burning by-law prevents any fire located outside, whether burned in a container or on the ground, not including a barbecue or personal warming device. These include:

  • campfires
  • fire pits and bowls
  • wood fuelled barbecues
  • outdoor wood fires
  • fireplaces
  • incinerators
  • chimineas

Under the by-law, the following devices are allowed:

  • Propane or gas fuelled barbeques and other cooking appliances
  • Propane or gas fuelled fire pits or fire bowls. They must be approved by Underwriters Laboratories of Canada Inc. (U.L.C), Canadian Standards Association (C.S.A) and Warnock Hersey Mark (W.H).

Open air burn permits are available at Service Oshawa for owners with more than 10 acres of land north of Conlin Rd. Please provide a sketch with the completed application. Restrictions apply with the permit process, such as the physical size of the burn and time of burn – dawn to dusk.
