Property and Temporary Conditional Exemptions
The following types of property are exempt from the requirements of the Vacant Building and Land Registry By-law:
- a property that is the principal residence of the owner or a lawful occupant - proof of residency is required;
- a property zoned for Agricultural Use;
- a property zoned as Greenspace;
- a property where an application for a registered plan of subdivision has been approved by the City;
- a property located on a plan of subdivision that are reserved as future school sites or park locations; or
- a property owned, managed or leased by the City.
Temporary (one year) conditional exemptions from the requirements of the Vacant Building and Land Registry By-law will be made for the following circumstances:
- when the owner's principal residence has become vacant due the owner being in care in a hospital, hospice, long-term care facility, assisted living residence, or home for special care; or
- when a building has become vacant due to the death of the owner.
Exemption requests
Property owners may seek an exemption from the requirements of the Vacant Building and Land Registry By-law by filling out an Exemption Application Form and paying the $150 fee. To complete the form download the Exemption Application Form
An Exemption Application Form must be submitted within the deadlines provided by Municipal Law Enforcement and Licensing Services.
