City of Oshawa celebrates Black History Month
February is Black History Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the history, contributions, and leadership of Black communities in Canada and in our local community. It’s an opportunity to reflect on the ongoing work needed to advance equity, inclusion, and belonging across the city. Community members are encouraged to learn more, engage with local initiatives, and take part in activities that highlight Black history and experiences.
Together We Rise Durham: Legacy ignites the path for youth to lead the future
Region of Durham, in partnership with Durham Regional Police Service, local municipalities and community partners is hosting a free community celebration for Black History Month on February 3, 5:30 p.m. at Milestone Christian Centre in Ajax. Registration is required.
City of Oshawa: Black History Month flag raising
On February 5 at 11 a.m. join us at City Hall for a morning of spoken word, steel pan drumming, and ceremonial flag raising in celebration of Black History Month.
RMG: In Conversation with Ekow Nimako
On February 7 at 2 p.m. visit the RMG for an artist talk with internationally exhibited LEGO artist Ekow Nimako, in conversation with writer and educator Ashley Marshall, exploring Afrofuturism and Black civilizations. Learn more and register today.
Trent University hosts Black History Month: Healing & Community in partnership with the City of Oshawa & CMHA Durham
On February 23 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. join a community gathering focused on healing, reflection, and connection. The event, held in Trent’s Building B Atrium, includes a panel on Black mental health followed by celebratory drumming and refreshments. Panelists include Dr. Connie Ojiegbe (Lakeridge Health & CMHA Durham), Sheryl Wedderburn (CEO, CMHA Durham), and Joshua Thompson (CMHA Durham). Registration is required.
