City secures $3.2 million provincial investment for water infrastructure improvements
The City of Oshawa has secured $3.2 million through the Ontario government’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program – Health and Safety Water Stream (MHIP-HSWS) to advance priority stormwater upgrades.
The funding will support new housing opportunities, strengthen neighbourhood resilience during severe weather and protect water service for residents.
The upgrades will support planned development in the Kedron Part II Planning Area, which includes approximately 1,800 new homes. New storm sewer and catch basin improvements and a new culvert at a tributary of East Oshawa Creek will improve drainage, reduce flooding risks and better support growing neighbourhoods.
The work is part of the future reconstruction of Conlin Rd. E. Phase 2 from Ritson Rd. N. to Harmony Rd. N. as the area continues to grow. This multi-year project represents a significant investment in Ward 1 estimated at nearly $40 million.
The Ontario government recently increased the MHIP-HSWS by $700 million, bringing the total to $875 million to support safe drinking water, housing supply, job creation and community protection during extreme weather.
To date, the government has contributed over $44 million to protect Durham Region’s water systems, including the Oshawa Water Supply Plant. This project will increase capacity, supporting the creation of up to 182,000 new homes in the region.
