Kick off Indigenous History Month with the Indigenous Cultural Celebration
The City of Oshawa is excited to invite all community members to the Indigenous Cultural Celebration on Saturday, May 30, at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park. This award-winning event marks the beginning of Indigenous History Month with a vibrant celebration of the rich and diverse cultures, traditions and enduring contributions of the Indigenous Peoples of Turtle Island.
The celebration will take place from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and is free for everyone. Attendees can enjoy a variety of presentations and interactive workshops led by First Nations, Inuit and Métis presenters, Knowledge Holders and storytellers. Event highlights include:
- Family Area: Storytelling, craft making, and interactive activities for all ages.
- Education Area: Water teachings, workshops, and demonstrations.
- Vendors: A selection of food and merchandise vendors showcasing and selling their creations and artwork.
- Main Stage: Presentations include hand drumming, traditional dancing, storytelling, and more.

Keep the celebration going all month long
The Indigenous Cultural Celebration is just the beginning. Throughout June, communities across Oshawa and Durham Region will host events, ceremonies, exhibits, and learning opportunities to honour Indigenous History Month. We encourage residents to show up, listen, and learn by:
- Attending events hosted by local Indigenous-led organizations and Friendship Centres.
- Supporting Indigenous-owned businesses, artists, and makers in our community.
- Exploring books, films, music, and podcasts by Indigenous creators.
- Learning about the traditional territories you live, work, and gather on.
- Reflecting on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action and what reconciliation looks like in your everyday life.
