Responsible pet ownership matters

The City of Oshawa is reminding the community about the importance of responsible pet ownership to ensure a safe and clean environment for everyone.

It’s important to keep dogs on a leash in public areas. Leashing helps prevent accidents, protects wildlife, and reduces the risk of conflicts with other animals or people. Even the most well-behaved dog can become distracted. A leash is essential for the safety of your pet and others.

A licence is required for all dogs, cats and ferrets within the City of Oshawa. Licensing helps ensure that lost pets can be quickly reunited with their owners and confirms that animals are properly vaccinated. Learn more and purchase your pet licence at oshawa.ca/PetLicence.

Pet waste in parks and neighbourhoods remains a shared concern within the community. The City requires animal owners to promptly clean up after their pets and dispose of waste in public garbage bins or at home. Taking a moment to pick up after your pet helps keep our spaces clean and enjoyable for everyone, while also reducing potential health risks.

These simple actions can make a significant difference. Being a responsible pet owner is about respect for your pet, your neighbours, and shared public spaces.

Residents are encouraged to review the Responsible Pet Ownership By-law and ensure they are meeting all requirements.
