Role of the Mayor

The Role of the Mayor under the Municipal Act is to:

  • act as chief executive officer of the municipality
  • preside over council meetings and provide leadership to the council
  • provide information and recommendations to the council with respect to the role of council to ensure that administrative policies, practices and procedures and controllership policies, practices and procedures are in place to implement the decisions of council
  • ensure the accountability and transparency of the operations of the municipality, including the activities of the senior management of the municipality
  • represent the municipality at official functions
  • carry out the duties of the head of council under the Municipal Act or any other Act

The Mayor also represents the City on the Council of the Regional Municipality of Durham.

Mayoral powers, decisions and directions

Strong mayor powers were granted to the City of Oshawa and 25 other large and fast-growing municipalities in Ontario in July 2023. 

Mayor for a day

Community members in grades five, six or seven who would like to be the Mayor of Oshawa for a Day are invited write a letter to the Mayor. Explain why you want to be Mayor of Oshawa for a Day, and what your vision is for the future of Oshawa.

Receive a letter or celebrate a business milestone

The Mayor, on behalf of Members of Council, offers letters of congratulations to residents celebrating 60th and over milestone birthdays, as well as couples celebrating their 40th and over wedding anniversaries in our community.

If you would like the Mayor to provide a letter for your significant milestone occasion, fill out the form below. If your require assistance to fill out the form below, please contact the Mayor's Office at 905-436-5674 or by email at mayor@oshawa.ca.

Required information

The following information is required for each request:

  • Name of occasion being celebrated (birthday or anniversary)
  • Name of recipient(s)
  • Name(s) to appear on the letter or certificate, if different from above
  • Actual birthday or anniversary date
  • Age or anniversary number
  • Recipients' mailing address
  • Requester's contact information: name, address, phone number and email address
  • Delivery/pick up information: mail to the Recipient(s), mail to the Requester or pick up from Mayor's Office
  • Delivery deadline date, if different than the occasion date

Submit a request

Requests must be made at least four weeks in advance of the required date.

To receive a letter or certificate complete the Receive a letter or certificate from the Mayor form.

The Mayor offers letters of congratulations to businesses celebrating milestones in our community that are celebrating notable milestones such as a grand opening or significant anniversary.

If you are planning a celebration and would like the Mayor to attend, please contact the Mayor's Office at 905-436-5674 or by email at mayor@oshawa.ca.

  • Name of occasion being celebrated (business opening or anniversary)
  • Name and full address of business
  • Name of owner/operator of business
  • Type of business
  • Date of celebration
  • Date of business opening or anniversary

Submit a request

Requests must be made at least four weeks in advance of the required date.

To celebrate a business milestone complete the Celebrate a business milestone form.
