Accessibility

The City is committed to providing a healthy and safe community with accessible facilities, programs and services for everyone to enjoy.

The City works hard to follow the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act 2005 (A.O.D.A.) and the required provincial requirements in the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation.

Our accessibility advisory committee

The City has an Accessibility Advisory Committee. These community volunteers, appointed by Council, help identify, remove and prevent accessibility barriers in City facilities, programs and services.

Our Accessibility Plan

The City of Oshawa has created a multi-year accessibility plan that shows the City's steps to remove barriers for people with disabilities. The plan, approved by Council and endorsed by the Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee, reaffirms our commitment to creating an inclusive, barrier-free community where everyone can participate fully and equitably.

This plan outlines our roadmap for enhancing accessibility across five key areas:

  • Information and Communications
  • Employment
  • Design of Public Spaces
  • Transportation
  • Customer Service

It reflects community engagement, collaboration with the Oshawa Accessibility Advisory Committee, and alignment with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (A.O.D.A.).

This report reflects our commitment to the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (A.O.D.A.). It outlines progress across five priority areas:

Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act  compliance report

To ensure that businesses and organizations are complying with the requirements of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (A.O.D.A.) accessibility standards, businesses, non-profit organizations and public sector organizations, such as municipalities, must file an accessibility compliance report every two years with the Government of Ontario to confirm that the organization has met the applicable requirements under A.O.D.A.

Oshawa Accessibility Design Standards

The Oshawa Accessibility Design Standards (O.A.D.S.) is a technical guide for ensuring building projects are accessible and often exceed the Ontario Building Code requirements.

This standard applies to constructing new buildings and renovating existing buildings owned, leased or operated by the City.

The City encourages the use of the O.A.D.S. in the community as the requirements include the principles of universal design that benefit people of all ages and abilities.
