Current City Challenges
TeachingCity is currently looking for student and faculty collaborators for the following City challenges:
Analysis of Pedestrian and Traffic Data
The City previously conducted a pedestrian and traffic counting study using AI at Conlin and Simcoe due to identified traffic and jaywalking concerns. The City is now interested in how the data can be used to develop recommendations to improve safety at this location.
Development of Staff Training Videos
City Operations and Municipal Law Enforcement staff are required to participate in a number of training sessions. The City is exploring an opportunity for these sessions to be conducted virtually so that employees can review the procedures at their leisure as a reminder to reinforce safety compliance.
Measuring the Impact of Social Media Messages
The impact of the City’s current recognition of Days of Significance is currently unknown, and the City is interested in exploring enhancing current practices.
Increasing Resident Knowledge on Local Government
The City is interested in taking more intentional efforts designed to increase the knowledge of Oshawa residents on local government.
Low Impact Development in Parks
The City is interested in research to inform future practices on L.I.D. including various options including: rain gardens, bioswales, infiltration trenches, permeable pavement, rainwater harvesting.
Evaluating Playground Safety Surfaces
A research project focused on exploring the various types of playground safety surfaces, providing the City with a concise technical guidance document that summarizes the research findings.
Strengthening the Vibrancy and Health of the Downtown
One of the City's priorities is to continue to focus on revitalization of the downtown core. The City approved Plan 20Thirty in 2021 with recommended actions to achieve revitalization and is accepting collaborations.
