Heritage Properties

There are many properties with cultural heritage value in Oshawa. Over 40 properties also have Ontario Heritage Act designation for their cultural heritage value or interest.

Learn more about:

City of Oshawa Municipal Register

The City is required by the Ontario Heritage Act to maintain a municipal register of properties identified by City Council as having cultural heritage value or interest. This register contains:

  • properties designated individually under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act
  • properties designated within a Heritage Conservation District under Part V, Section 41 of the Ontario Heritage Act
  • "Register Non-Designated" properties, which are identified by Council as having cultural heritage value or interest under Part IV, Section 27 of the Ontario Heritage Act, but not designated under Section 29 or 41.

Heritage Oshawa inventory

The Heritage Oshawa Inventory identifies properties of potential cultural heritage value or interest in Oshawa.  These properties are identified as 'Inventory' properties by Heritage Oshawa.

Opposite to properties identified on the Municipal Register, Inventory properties do not possess protections under the Ontario Heritage Act.

Heritage Plaque program

The Heritage Oshawa Historic Building Plaque Program identifies and showcases architecturally and historically significant resources in our community.

You may be considered for a plaque if your property is listed on either the City of Oshawa municipal register or the Heritage Oshawa Inventory and/or has historical and/or architectural significance.

The plaque identifies your property as a cultural heritage resource of the City. This recognition does not restrict the use of the property or impose obligations, and it will not limit the sale of the property nor enable public access to private property.

Heritage research reports

Heritage research reports provide research on a heritage property. This property research can include:

  • the property history
  • potential for heritage designation
  • potential heritage attributes

The following are some of the heritage research reports completed to date:

Heritage reports

Note: Due to their large file size, the appendices for the Heritage Research Report for 795 Colonel Sam Drive (Second Marsh, South Portion) and the Heritage Impact Assessment for 827 Gordon Street are not available online. Please contact heritage@oshawa.ca if you would like to obtain a copy of the full report with appendices.

Heritage Conservation Districts

In addition to recognizing individual properties, municipalities may designate Heritage Conservation Districts (H.C.D.'s). H.C.D.'s are designated under Part V, Section 41 of the Ontario Heritage Act.

Oshawa has one H.C.D., located in the core area of the South Field at the Oshawa Executive Airport. The H.C.D. contains the former Canteen and Stores Buildings, the Number 10 Building, and Airmen's Park.

To designate an H.C.D., a municipality must complete an H.C.D. Study and Plan.
