Building Permit Drawings
Structural drawings or plans for your property
You can submit a request for permit drawings associated with your property. If drawings or plans are located within our files and are in an issued or completed permit status they will be sent digitally to the owner or approved agent, hard copies will not be provided.
Are you the owner?
Only the owner of the property or their authorized agent can request drawings. If you are not the property owner, you will need to complete a Freedom of Information request. Authorized agents will be required to submit a completed authorization letter which can be uploaded when submitting the request.
Our files and record retention
As per 32-2021 Records Retention By-law Schedule A, the Building Services retention period for Permitting and Inspection records is 15 years, however it is not guaranteed that all records are available.
Depending on the permit history of a property, it is possible that we could have structural drawings/plans available older than the retention period.
In the event that we do not have drawings/plans on file and you require them for renovation work, a qualified person such as an architect, or designer, should be able to advise you on how to proceed without existing drawings/plans.
Timeline for drawing requests
Drawing requests submitted are processed within 4-6 weeks.
Looking for a Survey?
We do not provide surveys from our files due to Copyright laws (the surveyor owns the survey). To obtain a survey of your property you may wish to contact the Land Registry Office for Durham Region, or you may wish to check with these websites to see if you can obtain a copy through them.
Many of the local surveyors also maintain records of all surveys they have available, therefore contacting them may also reveal an existing survey on the property. If you are unable to obtain a copy of your properties survey through the above resources, you may wish to contact a third party to have a new survey completed.
