Economic and Development Services
The Economic and Development Services department delivers services contributing to the city’s development. The department comprises four branches:
Building Services
Building Services ensures all construction and demolition complies with Ontario’s Building Code and other applicable law. The branch also assigns municipal addresses and provides interpretations for Oshawa’s Zoning By-law and Sign By-law concerning building permits.
Business and Economic Development Services
Business and Economic Development Services branch offers developers, contractors and business owner’s guidance and support. The Branch is responsible for
- downtown revitalization and promotion of key economic assets
- events and culture initiatives
- advancing new commercial and industrial investment opportunities that position the City of Oshawa as a top destination in our region for business growth
Engineering Services
Engineering Services plans, designs and manages infrastructure projects related to the City's transportation and stormwater services, including:
- roads
- sewers
- bridges
- culverts
- sidewalks
- multi-use paths
- watercourse projects
This branch also reviews and manages new infrastructure through development and growth. It also identifies and plans for future transportation and stormwater needs through Master Planning to support city growth. In addition to developing technical standards focusing on public safety, the environment and the effects of climate change.
Planning Services
Planning Services manages and provides oversight of the regulatory processes for development, control of the organization and use of land, urban environment design and protection and enhancement of natural processes. Planning also manages the City’s real estate portfolio.
