At the June 2026 Council meeting, City Council approved the use of internet voting for Advance Voting and internet voting and paper ballots with vote tabulators on Voting Day for the 2026 Municipal & School Board Elections.

What is internet voting? |
Internet voting allows eligible voters to cast their ballot online. It provides a secure and convenient method of voting as ballots can be cast anywhere with internet access using a device of the voter’s choice, including computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc. |
Did the City consult the community? |
Yes, the City completed an extensive community engagement in spring 2024, which included a survey conducted by Environics Research, a Canadian-owned public opinion research company. Results were included in the December 2024 report to Council: Method of Election for the 2026 Municipal and School Board Elections. |
Why did the City exploring internet voting for the 2026 Municipal & School Board Elections? |
Prior to the 2022 Municipal & School Board Elections, staff were directed to develop a public consultation strategy on Internet Voting and prepare a report for consideration in 2024. |
Who decided if the City of Oshawa would offer internet voting as an option in the 2026 Municipal & School Board Elections? |
Under the Municipal Elections Act, City Council must pass a by-law in order to use an alternative voting method such as internet voting. |
