City of Oshawa mourns the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis
On behalf of Oshawa City Council, Mayor Dan Carter expresses his deepest sorrow on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis and offers his condolences to the Vatican and the global Catholic community.
Elected on March 13, 2013, Pope Francis was the first Jesuit and the first Latin American to become pope. He dedicated his life to humility, reform and promoting unity among people of all faiths. Among his significant achievements, he was dedicated to addressing the climate crisis and championing environmental stewardship. Known as the ‘People’s Pope’ he was known for his commitment to creating a more open and welcoming Catholic Church.
“In a world often divided, Pope Francis stood as a beacon of hope and unity,” said Mayor Carter. “His legacy of compassion and humility will continue to inspire us all.”
Flags will be lowered to half-mast at City Hall and City facilities to honour the memory of Pope Francis.
Community members are invited to sign a condolence book online at Oshawa.ca. Books of condolence will also be made available in-person as of April 22 at Oshawa City Hall (Service Oshawa), Delpark Homes Centre and South Oshawa Community Centre.
