Metrolinx Notice: Soil characterization work at Farewell Street Bridge
Metrolinx is preparing for the future Bowmanville Extension project, which will extend Lakeshore East GO rail service through Central Oshawa to Courtice and Bowmanville.
Why: XS Soil Solutions Inc. and its subcontractor (Strata Drilling Group) will be at Farewell Street Pedestrian Bridge conducting soil characterization sampling. This geotechnical investigation is critical to help inform the design and construction planning of future infrastructure upgrades that will improve transit in your community.
When: July 16 to August 7, 2025
Details:
During this period, work is scheduled to take place Monday to Friday, between 7a.m. and 5p.m. However, working hours may be extended or rescheduled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.
What to expect:
Residents should expect some noise, vibration, and dust due to construction activities. Site lighting may be utilized if necessary and will be pointed away from homes.
Staff will take reasonable precautions to minimize disturbances to residents and commuters, including but not limited to the following:
- Reduced idling of non-essential equipment.
- Safely securing the work area.
- White noise backup alarms on vehicles and machinery as required.
- Safety signage will be in place, and crews will follow all applicable safety and environmental guidelines.
- Once work is completed the affected areas will be restored to original conditions.
Pedestrian details:
Residents are reminded to comply with all posted signage, instructions and safety measures in place. As part of ongoing construction activities, the pedestrian bridge will be temporarily closed during working hours and reopened once the area has been safely secured at the end of each workday. As well, a flag person will be in the area to redirect pedestrians.
Traffic and Transit details:
Transit services and vehicular traffic will remain unaffected throughout the course of the work.
