City of Oshawa Celebrates Black History Month
In honour of Black History Month, the City of Oshawa is kicking off a month-long celebration of Black culture, achievements, and contributions, with a variety of exciting events and opportunities for the community to engage in meaningful reflection and education.
On February 4 at 9:00 am, join us as we raise the Pan-African flag at City Hall, a symbolic act to honour the global African diaspora and recognize the resilience, achievements, and ongoing struggles of Black communities.
In partnership with the Region of Durham and municipal and community partners, we are hosting Together We Rise: Resistance, Resilience, Possibility! 2025 Black History Month Celebration on February 5. The event will feature keynote speaker Dr. Andrew B. Campbell (DR. ABC), performances and awards for community champions. Admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Registration is required.
On February 26, we are excited to present Exploring Nollywood in partnership with Ontario Tech University Faculty of Social Science and Humanities. The event will include live musical performances, a facilitated discussion, and film screening of an original Nollywood film. Register now for this free event.
This month and throughout the year, we invite you to support local Black-owned businesses in our city. Supporting Black-owned businesses helps Oshawa’s community grow and thrive. Local businesses are important for creating jobs and opportunities and empowering our community members.
We are proud to celebrate Black History Month with events that not only honour history, but also create opportunities for dialogue, learning, and growth within our community and workforce. This month reminds us of the strength and contributions of Black communities, and we are excited to come together in celebration, education, and solidarity. We encourage everyone to participate in these events and reflect on the profound impact Black history continues to have on shaping our society.
